Pupil Premium

DfE Guidance:

'Schools, headteachers and teachers will decide how to use the Pupil Premium allocation, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for individual pupils.

'It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium, allocated to schools per FSM pupil, is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.

‘We know a good education is the key to improving young people’s life chances, to enable them to progress into adulthood with the skills and confidence for success. The Pupil Premium will provide schools with the resources with which to address inequalities in the system and raise the attainment of those pupils from low income families’.

Pupil Premium at Sandwich Junior School

Our mission at Sandwich Junior School is that as a team, we soar, strive and play. Within our happy, caring and compassionate school community, we ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all pupils. In 2016 SJS won a Pupil Premium Award, which reflects the work that we do to ensure gaps in vulnerable children's learning are closed. The Pupil Premium funding is additional to main school funding and has been designed to overcome the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.

The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011 and is allocated to schools to work with pupils who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years.

After completing a 10 week programme of additional music lessons, pupils in Year 5 & 6 were keen to share their experiences and explain how they thought this programme had impacted on their own learning:

"I definitely feel more confident in English because normally I would hide my ideas, but now I want to share my ideas and participate in class. I’ve just been told that I am going to be moved up a table as well."

"We learnt that we can use the patterns in drumming to help us with our fractions work, because we were using the speed of the beat to calculate fractions."

"I have found that this has boosted my brain, it has given me more juice and it made me feel buzzy!"
