A Reading School

Sandwich Junior School places Reading at the centre of everything which we do and as the foundation stone for effective learning across the whole Curriculum. It is absolutely essential that children develop these skills of decoding and comprehension in order to access not just the Curriculum itself, but also to unlock the world around them.

Whilst we recognise that not all children are able to access the same opportunities in life, we believe that Reading is a common right which all children should be able to share and it is our aim to give every child within our school equal opportunity in this regard.

Reading forms a large aspect of our daily discussions, regardless of which stage of education we are in and is used and valued in every aspect of our practice at the school.

Storytime is an essential part of our Curriculum and enables all children to share a common text, enjoying the pleasure of discovering a new text together and inspiring them to seek out texts of their own.

Every child will be supported in selecting reading books which both enthuse them and challenge them; we would also encourage parents to share these books and discussions with their children at home.

Reading newsletters are sent home termly and are full of information about the school's reading challenges and also recommendations for how parents can access reading opportunities outside of school.

Our library is a hub within the school and is manned by our wonderful librarians who are expert at recommending books to their peers and in discussing alternative authors and genres.

The children are able to exploit the resources both within the library and within their own classrooms, giving them the ability to choose from a wide range of text types (novels, short stories, picture books, graphic novels, magazines, comics etc) to pique their interest.

Our books are designed to complement our vision of valuing Diversity and thus represent all children regardless of race, colour, faith, gender or sexuality. Children are encouraged to recognise and engage with texts and authors from all of these demographics.

We hope all our parents and visitors will share our value and love for Reading.

Our Values

At Sandwich Junior School, the pupils and staff uphold our Core Values, which are at the centre of our school ethos and all that we do. They were first established by the pupils of our school, who chose specific animals that they felt represented the values and attitudes they should show every day, at school and at home:

The Wolf

Working together as a Wolf Pack, we are a community. Helping peers in difficult times, and celebrating our successes.

The Salmon

We always try our best – showing resilience, we never give up. We are always striving to reach the top and take risks with learning, as that is when we make our biggest leaps forward.

The Eagle

Aiming high to achieve the best we can be, and soaring high to reach our potential.

The Dolphin

When children enjoy their learning, they will achieve more.
